Making the Grade

What to expect from Wood Flooring Grades

To create an atmosphere and ambiance there is more than just a color or surface finish. One of the main characteristics in a wood floor is the grading, appealing to one, sophisticated to another, the grading is just that natural aspect that is making a real wooden floor your floor. Is a knot a defect? Or is it a natural aspect that we should embrace. No grading rule can ever explain all the differences nature can bring, but to give a bit of a guideline we have created different grading rules to give different expressions to your wooden floor.

As Explained we will not be able to give you a full sum up of all characteristics that a wooden floor is able to present. When the situation occurs that you have a real specific client asking about a certain grade like rift/quarter sawn or more rustic, no matter what question. Please feel free to contact our sales team, so we can look and try to create your own grading . This is one of the main advantages of a complete production in house.

Within all the gradingā€™s we try get a mixture that is making sure that we use as much as possible from the tree as we can, keeping wastage to a minimum and in this way put as little effort on the environment as we can.

Did you know that with every average wooden floor ( approx. 40 m2 ) installed you are a preventing approx. 250 kilos of CO2 coming back into the environment.

Prime

The name says it all prime grade is the most difficult grade to get from the tree, practically no knots are visible in this grade, and if there will be a knot it will be very limited in size. In this grade you will not find any sapwood, and very limited colour variations giving the floor a very smooth and classy look.
Rustic A / Select

In the rustic a grade you will find more knots, but they will be small in size, no bigger than a normal 1 Euro coin. Giving the floor a little bit more of a natural appearance. In the occasion of an outbroken knot the knots will be filled with complementary filler. In the rustic a grade there is no sapwood allowed. Colour variations are very limited.

Rustic A/B | Urban

Within this grade the healthy knots will be a little bigger than in the rustic a grade. The wood will be more lively giving your floor a bit more of an urban look and feel. In some of the boards you will find a small crack that of course will be filled if needed, as well for any other out broken knot. Included in this grade is a little streak of sapwood in a small percentage of the flooring boards.
Rustic Mix / Country

Actually the most real wooden floor grade you will be able to find. From top to bottom all the beauty nature can give is included in this grade. So you will find some bigger healthy and filled knots throughout the boards. As well the sapwood is more allowed in the grade. Of course all the nonĀusable parts like wormholes, rouge or rotten parts are not allowed in the grade, same as in all the other grades that we have at MaterialsArk . After installation this grade gives your interior a real natural appearance that cannot be copied.

Sapwood

Sapwood
Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It tends to be lighter in colour than the heartwood, and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise it since it doesnā€™t react to these treatments to the same degree. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all MaterialsArkā€™ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

Medullary Rays, Checks and Shakes

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

Knots and Fillers

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colors
